Office hours

You are required to take the exams when they are scheduled. Vacation plans, your sibling graduating from law school, weddings, and such are not acceptable excuses for missing the exams. If you have a legitimate reason for missing one, be sure to bring me the proper documentation from a physician, or judge. You also need to be on time to the exams. Staying up all night to study is ineffective, and sometimes leads to people not getting to the exams on time. Bad idea. If you miss an exam and do not have a legitimate reason for doing so you will earn 1 point for the exam.

If you do have a valid, documented reason for missing a test, here is the procedure for the makeup. I will make up essay questions and send them to you as an email attachment. You will write the answers and send it back 80 minutes later. Note that you will have to demonstrate mastery of lecture material and reading material to do well on the makeup, as you would on the regularly scheduled test.

Here is an example of the kinds of questions that would appear on a makeup:

You have learned about the chief characteristics of modern bureaucracy. Explain those characteristics in detail. Be sure to explain what is distinctly sociological about the theory I presented. Develop a detailed example that demonstrates your points. Include details from readings, lectures, and recitation in your answer.

A proper answer to this is long and detailed, because it has to demonstrate to me a firm grasp of the readings, lectures, and discussion in recitation.

It is usually not wise to miss one of my exams.
